So what is a loyalty program?
Lets look at it from your customers perspective.

We already talked about spend money get points.
We default to 1 point for each dollar spend.

Trade points for future spend.
We default to 30 points earns you a dollar. Pretty simple. That gives your customer the equivalent of 3% cash back. To spend in your store. But for you, it's not costing 3%. It's costing 3% x your cost of goods. That's likely 30%. So in reality, you're giving your customer 1% back. That's the least expensive marketing you'll ever buy. I'll bet you pay more than that to process credit cards.

Some will argue 3% back is too cheap.
That's up to you. I found it worked great in my restaurant. The points add up fast and the guests saw the value. It didn't break the bank. It brought people back - big time. They love the points.

Do you have a birthday club?
Do people come for annual celebrations - anniversaries, banquets? These events can be included in your loyalty program.

Do you use punch cards
(coffee cards, dessert cards, buy 8 get one free cards)? These can be included in your loyalty program.

Staying with your customers point-of-view for a moment - why wouldn't they want to join your program?

They don't want to carry another card.
Lets face it, everyone has a wallet full of these cards and it's a pain in the ass to find the card at the checkout counter. With your connected device, you can find them by name, phone number or email address. Most won't know their phone number (who calls themselves?) and they may not want you to have their email (who wants spam?)

They don't want to fill out a stupid card.
Who wants to fill out a card with lots of personal information? Not me. Likely not you either. So why ask for it?

Truth is, you don't want the administrative headache of entering the stupid cards either. Why do people do it? Because the government stuck their nose in once again and said you need to prove you have permission to contact these people.

So what if they signed up using their phone? They are on their devices all the time anyway, why wouldn't they use it to sign up? No admin for you! (And no - I'm not talking about downloading an app. No-one wants your app unless you are Starbucks or Groupon) We have a simpler way.

Big Brother is Watching
No-one wants big brother or the government to know what they are doing, buying or where they are frequenting. But let's face it - we live in a connected world. When you treat your customers information with respect and provide value when they let you into their world, you develop a customer for life.

What's the catch?
Sorry, there isn't one. What I've told you is 100% true. You can use the basic features of this system for free for as long as you find it of value. You can create your customer list easily and when (if) you outgrow the system you can take your list with you when you go. You do have a customer list, don't you?

Perhaps the biggest value in creating a loyalty program is developing your customer list. When I bought my first restaurant, there was no list. Unbelievable. The money is in the list. Don't rely on people stumbling upon your place to find your business. Reach out to them whenever you want by creating a list. Start now. You don't NEED this system to do it - start with a fishbowl of business cards and a draw! But build your list.

When you choose to upgrade to a subscriber on the site, you will be able to reach out to your list at will. Send birthday invitations. Let them know when you have specials or events. Keep your business top of mind with newsletters. Send them by email or text message. Or print an address list and mail them out. But remember the earlier message about spam. Respect your list and provide value to have customers on demand. Abuse your list and watch them opt out. Oh ya, that's the catch. You must be a subscriber to message your list with our system after your trial period. You can do pretty much everything else for free.

How much can you expect business to increase with a loyalty program?
Tough question! The answer really is it depends. On your type of business. On how you market your program. On how you respect and use your guest information.

Forbes magazine found that acquiring new customers costs five times more than retaining existing ones. As a result, finding ways to keep current consumers coming back is much more cost effective than constantly marketing to new customers.

According to Fast Company, consumers prefer small repeated gains to one large victory. Consequently, small repeated gains that can be achieved over time create the most rewarding customer experiences. This is why loyalty programs that give away points, or credits are so successful.

Loyalty programs can increase a brandís market share by as much as 20 percent.

Search through the wallet of the average consumer and you're sure to find a stash of loyalty or rewards cards. Stand in line at a retailer who has a loyalty program and you will likely see someone fumbling frantically for their card or trying to recall which phone number is tied to their membership to receive credit for their purchase.
